If you choose to do journal/short essay #5, worth 20 points, you will need to visit the site, below. There are a number of ads for perfumes on this site. Select two ads and do a one-page, typed, double spaced critique of the ads.

Identify the ads and compare or contrast their central themes, tactics, or creative approaches. Discuss the tone of the ads. What is the look and feel for each ad? Do they use sex appeals to sell fragrance? Are they selling a lifestyle or image? If so, what is that image? Do the ads use logic and reason or emotion? What emotions are the advertisers trying to convey? Are there distinct similarities between the ads, or are they notable for their different approaches?

NOTE: The questions above are some suggestions for topics of evaluation or critique. You do not have to answer all these questions BUT you are NOT LIMITED to these questions, either. Select interesting ads that give you something to discuss.

ANOTHER NOTE: DO NOT use personal opinion in these write-ups. You may write in past or present tense (“the Chanel advertisement featured…” or “the Clinique advertisement features…”).
